Review by Booklist Review

Johnson revises her 2004 work, summarizing basic methods and terminology of collection development and management. Topics include staffing; organization; budgeting and planning; analyzing, managing, and developing collections; marketing and outreach; and cooperative collection development. Updates in this edition include integration of electronic resources into all chapters and a new chapter on scholarly communication. The glossary has been expanded, and new case studies are provided with each chapter to facilitate translation of theory into practice. Coverage of public, school, and special libraries has been improved, but the text still most strongly details practice in large academic libraries. Those looking for a text should compare this with Developing Library and Information Center Collections, last updated in 2005 but covering the same territory, with more emphasis on daily practice.--Hollands, Neil Copyright 2009 Booklist
