Review by Booklist Review

This book celebrates the relatively uncommon art of hand stitching. No aspect of introductory sewing, from fabric choices to pattern directions, is left unexplained, and helpful tips for common sewing headaches fill the margins. Directions for creating two common types of stitches and attaching buttons are top-notch, with each step clearly depicted in color photographs. Using these basic stitches as building blocks, 12 tutorials involve fundamental skills such as hemming, reading a pattern, and creating gathers. Many of the projects are suitable for gifting and include both the decorative, such as a bunting to make a festive wall hanging, and the functional, such as a water bottle carrier. Each creation can be sewn up with scraps of fabric, or even with up-cycled materials. Readers are encouraged to exercise their creativity in selecting colors and materials for projects, and each can be easily personalized. This book is a fun introduction to a quickly disappearing handicraft that provides inspiration for the patience and imagination necessary to hone a love of sewing.--Anderson, Erin Copyright 2016 Booklist
