PreS-Gr 1-This attractive ABC book features animals found in the Canadian landscape. Each entry, done in cut-paper collage, introduces the animals using alliteration. For "A," the text reads, "Now arriving...Arctic Fox." "B" features two animals: "Beaver building branch by branch" and a "big, bold Bison." Other creatures include a Canada goose and her gosling "grazing on grass," a "king-sized Killer Whale," and, of course, a "magnificent mighty Moose." Turtles, toads, skunks, polar bears, loons, and jellyfish also make their appearance. Closing out the alphabet are "exuberant Muskox and exotic Lynx" and "fuzzy, grizzly, GriZZly Bears." Some quick facts about the featured animals are appended. For example, the bison's large head helps it push away snow to eat the grass underneath. The walrus uses its tusks to help pull itself out of the water and to make breathing holes in the ice, and the yellow jacket's nest can grow to the size of a basketball. Valério's cut-paper collages provide a lighthearted touch to this fine volume. VERDICT The impressive artwork and the succinct information make this an excellent addition to alphabet book collections.-Roxanne Burg, Orange County Public Library, CA © Copyright 2016.
