Understanding the fundamentals of music

Robert Greenberg, 1954-

Sound recording - 2015

For anyone wanting to master music's language, being able to read musical notation is a necessity. But this course, as Professor Greenberg notes, is a basic course, designed to introduce you to music's language in a way that is similar to the way you learned your own native language, by "discovering and exploring musical syntax through our ears-- by learning what the parts of musical speech sound like-- rather than what they look like on paper." By sidestepping the necessity to read music, these lectures represent an extremely rare opportunity in musical education-- an opportunity to experience a solid introduction to music theory's basics in a way that is not technically intimidating, yet provides a substantial gro...unding in the fundamentals--

Review by Library Journal Review

If music be the food of love, then Greenberg's lectern is laden with melodic meals even an absolute beginner can enjoy. Listeners need not know how to read music to learn from this series since composer Greenberg (formerly chair, music history and literature, San Francisco Conservatory of Music) devotes his lectures to the building blocks of music, clearly explaining language, timbre, meter, melody, and harmony. Anecdotes delivered in his enthusiastic Brooklynese add spice to this installment in the "Great Courses" series. Not for casual listeners, however, as they may well founder in the middle section if they haven't paid attention earlier on in the text. Verdict Recommended for listeners interested in expanding their knowledge of the basics of music.-Kelly Sinclair, Temple P.L., TX © Copyright 2016.
