K-Gr 2-In this follow-up to Baa Baa Smart Sheep, the duped Quirky Turkey is out for revenge. He waits for Little Baa Baa, shiftily holding a glass of "lemonade." "It looks a bit like pee," Little Baa Baa says. Turkey assures the lamb that the glass holds fresh-squeezed lemonade and is tricked into guzzling it down himself. "Oh no-I forgot. It WAS pee!" Little Baa Baa then offers the bird a cowpat "cookie." The goofy farm animals are drawn with a certain Boynton-esque charm, but there is no wit or kindness to soften the gross trickery. This title does not stand on its own, and the engaging cartoons and back-and-forth dialogue don't save it. VERDICT Although many young audiences will roar with laughter at the scatological humor, the mean-spiritedness and gross-out factor will be turnoffs for most adults.-Rachel Anne Mencke, St. Matthew's Parish School, Pacific Palisades, CA © Copyright 2016. Quirky Turkey wants "sweet revenge" after being duped into eating poop in Baa Baa Smart Sheep. But after an extended speech-bubble conversation with Little Baa Baa about the "lemonade" Quirky Turkey's holding, the unlucky bird gets tricked into drinking the pee. The quintessential gross-out humor will resonate with second graders; minimalist illustrations capture the antagonistic vibe in the characters' expressions. (c) Copyright 2017. "Revenge is a drink best served cold," reads the book's ominous epigraph.Quirky Turkey, who was tricked by Little Baa Baa into eating poo in Baa Baa Smart Sheep (2016), wants revenge. Billy the goat offers a glass of yellowish liquid (likely this won't end well for someone). Little Baa Baa happens by, and after commenting on the heat of the day, Turkey offers Baa Baa a cool glass of lemonade. Little Baa Baa loves lemonade, especially fresh-squeezed lemonade. And this lemonade is free, according to Turkey, to turkeyser, and sheep. Little Baa Baa is suspicious; it looks like pee. As in the earlier book, the action is all in the fast-paced dialogue: " So you're sure it's lemonade?' / Yes, it's lemonade.' / That's fresh.' / And squeezed.' / And delicious.' / And free!' / To sheep.' / And turkeys!' / YOU'RE a turkey!' / I AM a turkey!' / Who likes lemonade?' / Who LOVES lemonade!' / Thenwhy don't you help yourself?' / Don't mind if I do!' " Poor Quirky Turkey, tricked again. Little Baa Baa offers a cookie in consolation (you don't want to know). The Sommersets offer another tale of mischief told mostly in dialogue bubbles that is sure to make parents groan and umwee ones double over with laughter. Both the earth-toned, cartoon critters on slightly paler earth-toned solid backgrounds and precise sense of comedic pacing again bring Willems to mind.Guaranteed hysterics for readers with strong stomachs.
