Review by Booklist Review

Sakamichi Onoda has one dream in high school, to join the anime club. Every week since fourth grade, he has made the 90km bike ride to and from Tokyo's Akihabara shopping district just to buy anime and toys. But when school starts, Onoda not only discovers that the anime club has been disbanded; he also gets challenged by fellow first-year student Imaizumi, a very competitive bike racer. But how can Onoda and his mommy bike ever win a race against a future champion? Watanabe's title stands out from other sports manga because of its reluctant protagonist. Onoda doesn't want to be a sports star but finds himself dragged into bike racing. As he begins to realize that not all jocks are bad people, the athletes he comes across also find their expectations challenged. Watanabe's art features a lot of motion lines, but he keeps the page layouts clear and the characters distinct so that the story flows smoothly. This omnibus edition is a terrific addition to manga collections.--Wildsmith, Snow Copyright 2016 Booklist

Review by Publisher's Weekly Review

Watanabe (Train Man) personifies the Japanese flair for taking the most mundane of pursuits-fishing, cooking, etc.-and transforming them into epically melodramatic manga. Here he gives bicycle racing the graphic aggrandizement treatment, and it works to spectacular effect despite being framed in yet another narrative featuring the tropey tribulations of an awkward high schooler. Nebbishy otaku Sakamichi Onoda's daily 90-kilometer rides over steep slopes on a "mommy bike" have unexpectedly rendered him a formidable cyclist, which catches the attention of some highly-skilled cycling enthusiasts. It's the same "loser gains glory in a specific field of endeavor" yarn that readers have seen a million times, but Watanabe's jaw-dropping depictions of high-speed, stamina-testing bike racing set this effort head and shoulders above others. The dynamic imagery and copious speed lines place the reader right in the middle of the action, feeling the strain of muscles and the burn of lactic acid. Unremarkable in every other way, this series is saved by the world-class frisson provided by its racing sequences. (Dec.) © Copyright PWxyz, LLC. All rights reserved.
