Review by Booklist Review

Kerry James Marshall, one of the most significant artists working today, titled this comprehensive, sumptuously produced retrospective volume Mastry to encapsulate his complex and resounding approach to art: to master traditional painting skills and improvise on the old masters in order to address the Absence with a Capital A of African Americans as subjects and artists in fine art, dating back to the days of so-called masters and the enslaved. Marshall's masterful (yes, it must be said) and powerful paintings depict black people in everyday settings on a monumental scale with deeply historical and corrective intent. He celebrates African American romance and love in richly appointed paintings both intimate and highly stylized. In the Garden Project series, Marshall riffs on the pastoral convention in meticulously detailed and sharply ironic renderings of public-housing communities. Each and every galvanizing work by Marshall declares, Black Lives Matter. This definitive overview pairs invaluable commentary, including Marshall's own essays, with 150 color illustrations. The Mastry exhibition continues its tour in New York and Los Angeles, and this volume belongs in every American art collection.--Seaman, Donna Copyright 2016 Booklist
