Three cats report on their perspective of daily life with their human owners in cute but overly familiar set pieces in Dunn's debut collection of her webcomic. Dunn references situations any cat owner knows by heart, but the conceit of cats as newscasters with all the clichés of anchors and reporters gives them a sometimes new coat of paint. The appeal here are the pets: the cats look adorable holding microphones, wearing reporter clothing, and speaking their outrage. Each one has a distinct personality. Lupin is a white cat with big ears who takes things seriously, Puck is a black cat everyman, and angry comic relief Elvis is a suspenders-wearing Siamese with a hatred of just about everything. Marker and watercolor give the comics a soft, blended feel, fleshing out thin lines. Dunn (Swan Eaters) was roused by a crash in her house when one of her cats knocked down all of the items on a shelf. Her other two cats came to see what caused the noise. While picking up the mess with her husband, Dunn began to pretend that her cats were investigative reporters for a television news program. This is how Breaking Cat News was born, as a webcomic and eventually a book collection. News anchor Lupin, along with field reporters Puck, the sensitive one, and cynical Elvis, covers all kinds of common cat occurrences. Each "comic" starts with an animal, usually Lupin, at the news desk announcing the next event, and then the field reporters chime in with cat logic and sarcasm in a two- or three-page strip. From spraying skunks and Styrofoam peanuts to babies and bacon, these felines address any and all topics cat owners will recognize. Dunn makes a point that these are family-friendly jokes without being overly sterile, and the watercolor illustrations add to the whimsy. Verdict The activities of Lupin, Puck, and Elvis are sure to cause laughter for cat lovers of all ages; highly recommended.-Jason L. Steagall, Gateway Technical Coll.
