Review by Library Journal Review

This authoritative three-episode series was developed to coincide with the global celebration of the centenary of Ireland's 1916 Easter Rising. Produced by Notre Dame's Keough-Naughton Institute for Irish Studies and superbly narrated by Oscar-nominated actor Liam Neeson, this film uses archival footage, new segments filmed on location worldwide, and interviews with leading international historians to tell this important story. The first episode, "Awakening," sets the scene and introduces viewers to the main characters involved with the Easter Week rebellion, as well as highlights critical political and cultural events occurring worldwide at the same time. "Insurrection" examines the events of Easter Week 1916 on a day-to-day basis. "When Myth and History Rhyme" surveys the aftermath and response in Ireland and abroad to the Easter Rising. This $3 million production, which aired on both PBS and BBC, is thoroughly researched and technically very well done. VERDICT An ambitious documentary that takes on a crucial chapter in Irish history and delivers on all counts. Highly recommended for history buffs and general viewers.-Rod Bustos, Augusta Univ., GA © Copyright 2016. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc.
