Modern retro From rustic to urban, classic to colourful

Caroline Clifton-Mogg

Book - 2016

"In that yawning gap between the antique and the new, there is something else. Some call it vintage, some retro, but whatever the name the concept is the same - the objects and furniture that are not quite old and not quite new, but are always original and unique. Modern Retro looks at this fascinating area of design and decoration. The arrangement of rooms - where to put what - has always been a vital part of successful interior decoration, and it is even more important when it comes to creating an interior that is a mixture of the expected and the completely unexpected. It is an art and it requires a real skill, for there has to be respect for every object trouve, as well as an understanding of how each element will work best. Modern... Retro shows how to combine, how to edit and how to put the unlikely and the unusual together in a sympathetic way. Inspiration and ideas occupy every page of this absorbing book."--provided from Amazon.com.

Review by Library Journal Review

As defined by Clifton-Mogg (author of numerous design books, including the recent Modern Country), retro design represents furnishings patterned between the 1920s and 1970s, and here she shows how to integrate retro "with new and contemporary design, as well as incorporating it with vintage and antique." An array of interior styles are shown, from strictly modern to those displaying a rustic, industrial, or colorful composition. They are showcased in more than 15 case studies of interiors of homes in Europe and the United States. The concentration then shifts to the furnishings, lighting, textiles, surfaces, and decorative accessories to demonstrate how to use these items for their maximum design potential and how to display the pieces in bedrooms, bathrooms, living, dining, and outdoor spaces. -VERDICT The sophisticated designs shown here in over 300 color photographs provide a guide to blending 20th-century furnishings in contemporary interiors. © Copyright 2016.
