Edible science Experiments you can eat

Jodi Wheeler-Toppen

Book - 2015

"Grab a beaker, pick up your whisk, and get ready to cook up some solid science. Using food as our tools (or ingredients!) curious kids become saucy scientists that measure, weigh, combine, and craft their way through the kitchen. Discover dozens of thoroughly-tested, fun, edible experiments, sprinkled with helpful photos, diagrams, scientific facts, sub-experiments, and more. And the best news is when all the mad-science is done, you're invited to grab a spoon and take a bite -- and share your results with friends and family."--

Review by Booklist Review

This is an attractive addition to the recent spate of STEM activity books intended to capture a wider array of audiences. An international cast of student chefs work their way through almost 40 experiments, creating concoctions ranging from couscous to mealworm brownies. Recipes involve everyday kitchen food and standard science supplies (e.g., eyedroppers, modeling clay). Chapter activities are aligned with Next Generation Science Standards and are grouped under chemical mixtures, solids and liquids, gasses, actions and reactions, or biology (bacteria, fungi, or larvae). Most recipes are laid out across oversize double-page spreads (though some more ambitious undertakings, such as Baked Alaska, require three pages. Directions, ingredients, cooking times, baking and preparation tips, and levels of difficulty (ranging from Easy to Grab a Grown-Up) are provided. Each recipe includes The Science Scoop, a succinct summarization of the science at work. This eye-catching, step-by-step manual is backed up by online resources and will be of interest to home and classroom experimenters.--McBroom, Kathleen Copyright 2016 Booklist
