Review by Booklist Review

This inviting celebration of Viking life and culture will satisfy the information needs of researchers while also piquing the interest of casual browsers and burgeoning historians. Graphics-rich two-page spreads present charts, graphs, lists, time lines, and accessible essays, all set off by inviting fonts and borders, full-color photographs, and detailed illustrations. A feisty Viking sensibility pervades throughout, inviting readers to ride with Valkyries, seize new vocabulary by the horns, and think like a Viking as they tackle content. Four chapters (Meet the Vikings, Viking Life, Gods and Men, Viking Games) present traditional background information alongside updated, current reports on ongoing excavations and evolving theories that confirm or debunk existing stereotypes. Historical reenactments and pop-culture references help make content relevant, as do interactive features that allow readers to determine which Viking god they are most like, create a saga-worthy nickname, decipher runes, or choose how to settle a dispute. This addition to the National Geographic Everything series should prove to be popular, and it will definitely not disappoint Thor and Avengers fans.--McBroom, Kathleen Copyright 2015 Booklist

Review by Horn Book Review

With Andrew Jennings. This volume provides a broad overview of Norse civilization during the Viking Age, A.D. 7931066. In four main chapters, a wide variety of topics are covered cursorily. Multiple text boxes, maps, graphics, and action-packed digital illustrations give the pages a busy feel. Opportunities for interaction (e.g., a "What's Your Viking Nickname?" activity) are plenty.
