Loom knitting uses a round loom or a straight board with pegs to create a knitted fabric. In this fully updated second edition of her 2007 book, Phelps (Loom Knitting Afghans) introduces the basics of loom knitting: choosing the appropriate loom; tools for loom knitting; felting knitted items; and methods for casting on, knitting, and binding off. Each section includes step-by-step instructions with -illustrations that clearly show the path of the yarn or hook from the perspective of the knitter holding the loom. A selection of projects, organized by type of loom used (round loom or board), completes the collection. From simple hats and scarves to cabled socks and a colorwork afghan, this guide also features a brief tutorial on textured stitch patterns using alternating knit and purl stitches, which is helpful for loom knitters interested in customizing the projects. VERDICT Loom knitting is ideal for crafters who want to create knitted fabric but find it difficult to work with traditional knitting needles. Phelps's thorough overview of the basics will assist crafters in deciding if the technique is for them. © Copyright 2016. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc.
