Begun in 2009 with The Dragon of Trelian, this excellent fantasy trilogy finally receives a worthy ending. Princess-heir Meg refuses to believe that her best friend Calen has willingly betrayed her by siding with Mage Krelig, who seeks absolute power. Instead of taking to the skies on her dragon, Jakl, to search for Calen, she is training to fight with Trelian's soldiers, hoping her aerial attacks will give them an edge in the war. As an apprentice mage, Calen believes Krelig can teach him to develop his rare powers, but he is desperate to escape his cruel new master. Changed by what they have seen of war, Meg and Calen wonder if their sacrifices will be worth it. Readers will never fully doubt Calen's intentions or Meg's forgiveness, but their fears that they have changed too much to remain friends is believable. Humorous moments lighten the overall tone, and despite dark, scary situations, this is a reassuring read in which the characters survive trauma and find their true purpose with love and support.--Hutley, Krista Copyright 2016 Booklist

Calen, captured by evil mage Krelig, must appear loyal to Krelig while he hones his magical talents and plots his escape. Meanwhile, Meg and her dragon have been training for impending war with a rival kingdom. When Meg and Calen reunite, the confrontation with Krelig plays out predictably. Nevertheless, the entire trilogy (The Dragon of Trelian; The Princess of Trelian) is an enjoyable read. (c) Copyright 2016. The Horn Book, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. Review by Kirkus Book Review

An exemplary middle-grade fantasy trilogy concludes with a blast. Lots of blasts. Apprentice mage Calen knew he'd regret going off with a crazed villain to save his friends' lives, but he didn't realize how much he could learn from the vicious Mage Krelig. Meanwhile, his best friend, Princess Meg, is struggling to maintain her faith after his apparent betrayal, as she and her dragon begin military training to aid their besieged kingdom of Trelian. Since the loyal mages seem more interested in squabbling than in preparing for war, only Calen's rapid growth in strength and skill may be enough to thwart Kreligexcept that it's getting ever harder for him to resist the lure of knowledge and power. This works as well as a friendship story as an epic fantasy; despite their long separation, the immensely likable main characters know and trust each other enough to rely upon the other's ability, understand the risks the other must take, and accept the sometimes-painful changes that result. And each even gets a hint of romance (most refreshingly, not with each other)! The pacing races smoothly through increasingly dire events, right up to a suitably thrilling climax, into a denouement that, if not unrealistically blissful, exactly suits their personalities and desires. A solid, satisfying genre performance; it may not invent any new tricks, but it executes each component in a grand fashion. (Fantasy. 11-16) Copyright Kirkus Reviews, used with permission.
