Review by Library Journal Review

The average person uses soap products many times a day without a thought. What about making your own? Coss, British soapmaker and author, offers a solid introduction to soapmaking that starts with a charming introduction to the history and impact of soap on civilization. Explanation of terminology is well placed, as are lists of materials and equipment needed. Basic techniques are reviewed and clearly illustrated, with important coverage of safety as the use of some caustic materials is involved. Coss offers an evaluation of scents and essential oils with properties and esthetics in rather great detail. The recipes are grouped by scents and main components, including fruit, floral, herbs and spices, dairy, glycerin, and coconut. Anitsepic soap is included, as are products tailored to men and other specialty items. The up-to-date list of resources at the end includes both U.S. and UK companies. VERDICT This slim book lays a great foundation for soapmaking. Coss takes the reader from elements to completion with a variety of great recipes that explore different bases and ingredients. The instruction is wonderful and authoritative, and with local soapmaking on the rise as a cottage industry, this is a vital manual. © Copyright 2015.
