Handford's third novel (after Acts of Contrition and Daughters for a Time) centers on identity and how the people in our lives shape our choices. Melissa "Missy" Fletcher doesn't possess her father's flash or outgoing personality; she's content to be the sensible one working in their financial business while he charms the world. When her dad is diagnosed with Alzheimer's, their dynamic changes a bit, but Missy is still the rock. After his death, she discovers a letter written by him. It's clear that while he appreciated the steadiness she has, he didn't admire it and thought she should have been taking more risks. Devastated by her father's opinion of her, Missy decides to make changes in her life. She overcomes old fears and realizes her power. Her journey takes her to Italy and then to India. Along the way, she picks and chooses the things that will make up her new identity. VERDICT Fans of Carrie Brown and Helen Simonson will enjoy this quietly moving tale.-Jane Jorgenson, Madison P.L., WI © Copyright 2015.
