Review by Library Journal Review

On the day in 1938 that Hitler is feted by Mussolini in Rome, a radio announcer (Marcello Mastroianni), fired for his leftist politics and homosexuality, befriends a neighbor (Sophia Loren) whose husband and half dozen kids have left to celebrate Der Führer. Ettore Scola's (We All Loved Each Other So Much) exploration of two different but lonely people coming together while an audio broadcast of the Fascist festivities plays in the background is beautifully realized by a pair of superb actors and color-desaturated cinematography lending a period feel and emotional mood.
