Grouchy Grizzle Grump, a bear who lives deep in the dark forest, attempts to find the ideal spot to hibernate, with blanket and pillow in tow. Three times he thinks he has found the perfect locale only to be rousted first by woodpeckers, then by beavers whapping their tails, and finally by the eeerp meerp of frogs. Eventually, he finds a remote snowy cave and falls into a deep sleep. The other animals get their comeuppance when his loud snores echo out of the cave and throughout the woods, forcing them to flee. The crisp computer-generated illustrations clearly depict the humorous creatures, their habitats, and the travails that Grizzle Grump endures. However, it is the rich text full of fanciful sounds the woodpeckers' nik nok and the cacophony of other animal noises in response to Grizzle Grump's loud snoring, and Grizzle's scratching, sniffing, teetering, tottering, wiggling, wobbling, flipping, and flopping that will be a hit with storytellers and have audiences rolling with laughter.--Enos, Randall Copyright 2015 Booklist

PreS-Gr 2-It's autumn, and that means it's time for bears to hibernate. Grizzle Grump is trying to find a nice quiet place to settle in for the winter. Each time he finds a seemingly perfect place, he scratches and sniffs, teeters and totters, and flops down to rest. Before long, though, there is some other woodland creature "nik-noking," "whap-whumping," or "eeerp-meerping." It's not until Grizzle Grump hikes to a cave at the top of a mountain that he is able sleep soundly. His loud snoring, however, won't allow any other creature to sleep! Adorable and hilarious Photoshop and colored pencil illustrations match the text perfectly. The repetition and sound effects ensure that children will love this shared one-on-one or read aloud, any time of day. VERDICT This book won't get much rest on the library shelves.-Emily E. Grizzle Grump is a bear who just wants to find a place to hibernate in peace and quiet. Repetitive text and illustrations build the joke, allowing children to anticipate the silliness ahead. Grizzle Grump's and the forest's noises, along with cartoony, high-spirited digital and colored-pencil illustrations, make this an entertaining read-aloud. (c) Copyright 2016. One bear's quest for a quiet place to hibernate is thwarted by lots of noisy critters. Armed with his tiny blue-and-white polka-dot blanket and a pillow, Grizzle Grump, though undoubtedly large and possessing claws and teeth, doesn't exactly match the menace of the opening spreads. Granted, his "polite YAWN" does snap trees and send small animals flying, but he's just looking for a place to rest his head. Young readers have a chance to get in on Grizzle Grump's action, as, much like a dog lying down for a nap, he has a routine for settling in that involves lots of scratching, teetering, wobbling, and flopping, and the woodpeckers, beavers, and frogs give him plenty of reason to find new spots to sleep. And when he finally gets his message across to the other woodland animals and falls deeply asleep, his noises drive them away. Blecha's Photoshop illustrations will remind more than one reader of Melanie Watts' Scaredy Squirrel series; his characters have pop eyes and exaggerated facial expressions and body language. Strangely, a gray squirrel follows Grizzle Grump around, sometimes seeming a friend, other times appearing afraid of the big bear. This is a good choice for read-alouds and great fun, especially for those readers who can appreciate a good nap. (Picture book. 4-8) Copyright Kirkus Reviews, used with permission.
