Did you ever wonder what Cinder's childhood was like as a cyborg? How Scarlett came to live with her grandmother, and what exactly was the connection between Scarlett, her grandmother, and Cinder? Meyer reveals these backstories and more in her latest Lunar Chronicles volume. More short stories than seamless story line, this collection answers those niggling questions readers inevitably asked themselves as they read each of Meyer's fairy tale riffs. Winter's scarred face and refusal to use her glamour? Cress' isolation on the Lunar satellite? Even Iko's transformation from discarded android to Cinder's best friend? All is revealed. Whether to read at least some of these as an introduction to each novel or wait to savor them after reading the series is debatable; reader satisfaction, however, is not. Meyer ties up the loose ends in a final happily-ever-after story that allows all the good ones Earthens, Lunars, androids, and cyborgs alike a chance at peace, love, and a well-deserved happy ending. HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: Just when the insanely popular Lunar Chronicles looked finished, this piecemeal, but still quite weighty, book will pull readers right back in.--Bradburn, Frances Copyright 2016 Booklist

Gr 9 Up-Fans of "The Lunar Chronicles" are treated here to nine short stories, seven of which flesh out seminal moments in the characters' young lives, including how Cinder came under the protection of Michelle Benoit, the traumatic incident that causes a young Winter to vow never to use her lunar gift; Cress's initial imprisonment in the satellite; and Wolf's conscription into the Queen's Army. The collection is rounded out with Cinder and Kai's first meeting from the prince's point of view and, finally, a story set two years after the events of Winter with the major characters reuniting for a wedding. Rebecca Soler once again lends her considerable talents to the series. As always, her pacing is excellent. VERDICT Series fans will be delighted to have expanded backstories, and they will be thrilled to hear about the happy endings in store for their favorite characters. ["This companion title will not disappoint fans and will make a worthy addition to libraries where the "Lunar Chronicles" are popular": SLJ 4/16 review of the Feiwel & Friends book.]-Amanda Raklovits, Champaign Public Library, IL © Copyright 2016.
