Review by Library Journal Review
This appealing volume contains some of the most distinctive lines and snatches of dialog, from clever to caustic, uttered by Downton Abbey's unforgettable characters. -Fellowes (A Year in the Life of Downton Abbey; The World of Downton Abbey) carefully selected the quotes from the award-winning series created and written by her uncle, -Julian Fellowes, neatly separating them into categories-life, love, work, play-with witty subheadings. Fellowes has chosen well, including lines both incisive and pungent as delivered by masters and servants alike that are reflective of their singular personalities. There are quotes from Mrs. Patmore, Carson, Matthew, Branson, and, definitely, Violet Crawley, whose sharp pronouncements are spoken by the incomparable -Maggie Smith in her memorable role as the dowager countess. From pithy one-liners to brief interpersonal repartee (note the exchanges between Violet and Isobel), readers will find humor, wisdom, and memorably stinging barbs within these pages. The author's thoughtful introduction serves as an ideal prelude to the book; generous photographs perfectly complement the text, recalling the lush beauty and historic charm of the series. VERDICT Fans of Downton Abbey will cherish this memento of their favorite people and plotlines. Even those not familiar with the series will find the text engaging.
