Horácek's latest board book is a short, sweet treat for the senses. Consisting of six double-page spreads, the story follows the ever-smiling Tiny Mouse as she enjoys the natural world in the sunshine, at night, and during a snowfall. The scenes are simple but vibrant as she delights in leaves and snowflakes. Also included are effective cutouts: one way, a round hole becomes the moon; the other way, the sun. The final spread reveals the titular surprise: a rainbow for Tiny Mouse to admire. With Horácek's rotating wheel, young children can work on their turning skills to make the rainbow disappear and reappear.--Nolan, Abby Copyright 2015 Booklist

Die-cut pages and an interactive turn-wheel enliven the quietly evocative story of a gray mouse. Summer becomes autumn becomes winter as the pages flip, and Tiny Mouse makes the most of each season: "Tiny Mouse loves nibbling wheat in the sunshine. She likes to watch the crackly leaves blow in the wind." When spring rain showers arrive, Tiny Mouse dives through a round die-cut hole, and the final spread shows her peeking out from her grassy burrow; turning a wheel embedded in the back cover allows readers to make a rainbow emerge as the sun returns. Baby/Toddler-Through richly textured, collage mixed-media illustrations and short, simple sentences, pre-readers meet Tiny Mouse, who loves nibbling wheat in the sunshine. Children learn about the other things Tiny Mouse enjoys, such as watching the crackly leaves blow. Carefully placed die cuts that offer a glimpse into the next spread make for an effective transition between pages. A surprise awaits Tiny Mouse (and readers) when she emerges from her hiding place after some splashy rain: a rainbow on a wheel, which children can turn, making the rainbow appear and disappear. Tiny Mouse likes all kinds of weather, except for "splashy rain." "Tiny Mouse loves nibbling wheat in the sunshine," and she also enjoys watching the wind-blown leaves. "She likes the crunchy frost on a cold night" and the snowflakes that land on her nose. The delightful mixed-media illustrations are further enhanced by a variety of die-cuts throughout that will have babies wanting to touch. On the first two-page spread, the upper right corner follows the contours of Tiny Mouse, and on the verso, these are the contours of the dried leaves. As Tiny Mouse crunches on the frost on a cold night, a die-cut circle outlines an equally frosty-looking moon, which becomes snow on the next page. But when the weather turns wet, Tiny Mouse is encouraged to run into her hole and hide, and the hole is right there waiting for her. The real surprise in the book comes at the end, when Tiny Mouse's nose peeks out of her hole to find the sun has come out and made a "lovely rainbow." The rainbow is an embedded wheel sturdy enough to last through many a spin. The baby-friendly text is rich in vocabulary: "nibbling," "crackly," "crunchy," "tickle," "splashy," lovely"all words that babies will easily understand by the context.
