Review by Library Journal Review

Offering 26 episodes from the long-running PBS television series, this set covers an intriguing variety of recipes ranging from the simple (perfectly cooked soft-boiled and fried eggs) to the more involved (a berry trifle requiring multiple components and assembly). Host Christopher Kimball and his regular staff guide viewers carefully, ensuring that the science behind each step is clear but not overwhelming in detail. Interspersed throughout are test reports on kitchen tools and foodstuffs or responses from Kimball to viewer letters. The presentation is occasionally stiff and oddly staged (Why is there no interaction with all those cooking in the background?), and the methodical approach to a "perfect" iteration of each dish strips some joy and spontaneity from the kitchen. Inclusion of PDFs of recipes is a welcome extra. VERDICT All in all, the personalities on screen are relatable, and viewers are certain to glean helpful techniques to try. Recommended for any collection where home cooking is popular.-Peter Hepburn, Coll. of the Canyons Lib., Santa Clarita, CA (c) Copyright 2014.
