In this guide, Joicey and Nothdruft, the head and curator, respectively, of London's Fashion and Textile Museum, offer younger audiences a fresh look at vintage fashion through drawing it. A time line covering decades of the 20th century from 1920s through the 1990s provides the historical backbone of the book. Numerous short interviews with top designers and fashion experts such as Anna Sui and Paul Smith follow to provide inspiration. Dozens of step-by-step drawing exercises of signature looks of various bygone eras comprise the bulk of the work. The inclusion in the drawing lessons of lots of alternate looks, accessories, and explanations of fashion vocabulary make them especially dynamic. Photographs of models working the runway in iconic styles also help keep the reader engaged. The last section gives suggestions about where and how to research fashion and supplies a helpful glossary. VERDICT This fun survey of 20th-century fashion is surprisingly informative, particularly for tweens and teenagers, whether or not they choose to follow the drawing lessons. (c) Copyright 2014.
