Review by Library Journal Review

It's common for a person to know that they have to change, but actually making it happen can be a frustrating battle. -Zuckoff (psychology, Univ. of Pittsburgh) and psychologist Gorscak begin by reducing the pressure to modify behavior and then enable the reader to use their own confidence and response to the desire to create new strategies or build better life tools. What the authors call "motivational interviewing" involves accepting the ambivalence of change, then discriminating between the shoulds of others and one's own values and concerns. They painstakingly guide readers through innumerable case studies that demonstrate that it's possible to change. -Verdict One of the most empathetic books on the subject of altering behaviors. The authors allow for failures and offer alternatives. -Recommended.-Deborah Bigelow, Dexter Dist. Lib., MI, director emerita, Leonia P.L., NJ © Copyright 2015.
