The bridge Die Brücke

DVD - 2015

"... the first major antiwar film to come out of Germany after World War II, as well as the nation's first postwar film to be widely shown internationally, even securing an Oscar nomination. Set near the end of the conflict, it follows a group of teenage boys in a small town as they contend with everyday matters like school, girls, and parents, before enlisting as soldiers and being forced to defend their home turf in a confused, terrifying battle. This expressively shot, emotionally bruising drama dared to humanize young German soldiers at a historically tender moment"--Container.

Review by Library Journal Review

In the waning days of World War II, a German bridge of no strategic significance is provided protection by seven barely trained teen soldiers. Orders given from a sympathetic local commandant are intended to keep the naïve recruits from being sent to the front lines, but the gung-ho troopers take their mission way too seriously, defending their village bridge to the death in the face of advancing Allied tanks. Surprising for its era, Bernhard Wicki's powerful antiwar film, based on an actual incident, dramatizes the horrible folly of blind patriotism. [Trailers, LJ 5/1/15.] © Copyright 2015.
