Simple color knitting A complete how-to-knit-with-color workshop with 20 projects

Erika Knight

Book - 2015

Each of the 20 projects in this book teaches you a new color-knitting technique - from working motifs in intarsia in a graphic Missoni inspired throw to creating Fair Isle patterns through stranding and weaving in the two-color snood scarf. At the same time you will consolidate and build upon those color skills already learned with the preceding projects. In addition, Erika dispenses her designer tips on putting different shades together, whether they are primary colors or neutral shades, monochrome schemes or punchy accent hues. She puts this basic knowledge into practical terms that every knitter will understand and relate to. Simple Color Knitting contains an introductory chapter of basic techniques which is followed by the core of the b...ook: 20 original designs, from cushions and throws to hats and scarves. Each project provides the perfect vehicles for practicing your colorwork, whether that is random striping, tonal phasing, texture stitches or pictorial motifs.

Knitwear designer Knight (Simple Knitting) introduces four basic colorwork techniques-stranded knitting, intarsia, slip-stitch knitting, and duplicate stitch-in this workshop-style collection of tutorials and patterns. Knight begins with the standard explanation of color theory and the color wheel, as well as an overview of colorwork techniques. The sample swatch gallery, organized by technique, shows the effects that can be produced with each type of knitting. Knitters are then invited to practice each technique in a series of patterns that explore color combinations via color knitting. While most colorwork patterns feature fine-weight yarns, the majority of the patterns in this book are for worsted-weight and bulky yarns, which may reduce the intimidation factor for knitters new to colorwork. Increasing the scale of traditional colorwork also produces some interesting effects, such as the large-scale houndstooth hat, in which this traditional motif is transformed into abstract shapes as it travels around the cap. The combination of watercolor illustrations and Sugiura's dramatic and beautifully lighted photographs add flair to Knight's exploration of color knitting. VERDICT Colorwork is a popular topic, and Knight's collection is best for knitters with an appreciation for fine design and for knitters most comfortable working with bulkier yarns. © Copyright 2016.
