The oversize books in the Amazing Animal series are notable for their extraordinary photographs. From the large close-ups on the cover to the 10 or so photos inside, these pictures are heads above most series photography. The books are also handsomely designed, with the spare yet informative text bolstered by photo captions. All of the books include the animals' habits, life cycles, and descriptions of how they function within their environment. Beavers puts some of its focus on dam-building (though younger readers may wonder why dams are built at all). Though there's not a lot of information in these series titles, there's enough for short reports. But the books will also get heavy use by browsers who will be oohing and aahing at the up-close-and-personal art.--Cooper, Ilene Copyright 2010 Booklist

PreS-Gr 1-These new titles in this well-established series provide basic information on various animals: feeding habits, reproduction, habits, and more. The large font size, simple sentences, clean layout, and pared down back matter make these selections ideal for readers making their first forays into nonfiction. The information presented is to be expected. However, what sets these offerings apart are the sumptuous, full-page photographs, featuring these breathtaking beasts in their natural habitats. Vivid photographs providing up-close views of the daily lives and behavior of the title mammals are the highlights of these slim volumes. Minimal texts touch on habitat, appearance, diet, and offspring, and supply a folk-story answer to a question about each creature (e.g., "Why do beavers slap their tails on water?
