Kat Hartmann

Book - 2015

"For many of us, the rough plant hangars or friendship bracelets we made in summer camp are the extent of our experience with macramé. Today the craft of decorative knotting is making a huge comeback with several accomplished artists taking the craft to exciting new levels of creativity. Hot Knots explores a variety of macramé techniques -- from historical, centuries-old designs, to modern fusion knots -- and guides readers through 18 cool and contemporary projects for jewelry, housewares, accessories, and more."--Provided by publisher.

Review by Publisher's Weekly Review

Hartmann, who has been involved in publishing and creative industries for decades, collects macramé projects from more than 20 crafters, walking step-by-step through Chinese crown-knot bag straps, knotted tank tops, and a baby swing using the simple lark's head. The projects are rated on a difficulty scale of one to three knots. A few more "difficulty knots" are needed for some challenging projects: headphone wire covers, delicate drop earrings, and fringe detail to customize a T-shirt. These may produce more fiber fizzle than textile triumph. More than 200 color photos. (Apr.) © Copyright PWxyz, LLC. All rights reserved.

Review by Library Journal Review

The history of macramé may stretch back to the 13th century, but the craft is as closely associated with the 1970s as disco and polyester leisure suits. Hartmann's instructional guide attempts to update macramé's dated image by presenting a variety of crafts, including delicate accessories, rustic home decor items, and summer-camp classics such as dreamcatchers and knotted keychains. The approach is to learn by doing, and different styles of knots are presented in line with the projects with references throughout the book. Though there are a few missteps with the styling, such as the chunky dip-dyed cord bracelet that disturbingly looks like it was dipped in blood, most of the projects are in line with today's trends and will appeal to crafters with a bohemian/modern hippie style. VERDICT Up-to-date titles about macramé are difficult to find, and while Hartmann includes nods to 1970s-era classics such as owls and plant hangers, contemporary crafters will find that macramé is both simple and versatile. © Copyright 2015.
