Mr. Kate, the nom-de-craft of L.A.-based craft blogger and YouTube star Kate Albrecht, is a lot of things-an entrepreneur, a DIY and repurposing fiend, and, best of all for her readers, a very funny woman. In her first book, 50 different craft projects are interspersed between a series of essays about everything from growing up in Hollywood to falling in love with (and marrying) the drummer from a popular pop band, and trying to make it as an actress and filmmaker. The craft projects are standard DIY fare-there's lots of embellishment gluing, creative repurposing, and painting of old furniture-but Albrecht also includes interesting DIY beauty tips and tricks-putting in your own hair extensions, making lip balm, and makeup contouring, for example. With Albrecht's distinctive voice, the projects are extraneous-you're reading to see what her next riotously amusing story will be. She combines the earthiness of Sarah Silverman or Amy Schumer with the DIY spirit of Martha Stewart-an absorbing combination, but it works. VERDICT Crafters may be most familiar with Mr. Kate, but readers who enjoy humorous memoirs will get a kick out of Albrecht's stories- you don't have to have a crafty bone in your body to enjoy her entertaining reflections on her life. © Copyright 2015.
