PreS-Gr 1-This aptly titled tale is a droll, splashy counting book with plenty of laughs. A pig settles in with his rubber duck to enjoy a relaxing bath, but is soon joined by another pig, and then another, until nine more porkers have squeezed into his tiny tub. But they quickly scatter when a wolf appears to take a bath of his own, counting back down to zero. Anderson combines humor with simple, straightforward rhymes to successfully convey basic counting concepts. The crisp, bold illustrations rendered in ink and Photoshop are all done on bright spreads and include colorful block typeface that match the bouncy, comic tone of the text. The animated cartoon characters exude personality and add to the humor, particularly when the pigs are all featured together in the overcrowded tub. Because of its big, vivid illustrations and rhythmic, sprightly rhymes, this story is ideal for sharing with a group as a read-aloud. The ending, in which it is revealed that the wolf is actually a pig in disguise, is a clever and satisfying conclusion to this funny counting adventure. VERDICT Pithy and brisk, this book is a solid choice for children learning to count and young readers looking for a good laugh.-Laura J. Giunta, Garden City Public Library, NY (c) Copyright 2015. A pig finds soaking in a bubble-filled bathtub to be pure bliss. Its joy is short-lived, though, when, one by one, nine additional pigs pile in to join the fun. The only way for the first pig to reclaim the oasis is to go undercover (as a wolf). The humorous rhyming text is buoyed by the jubilant ink and digital illustrations. (c) Copyright 2015. Ten pigs in a tub?! That can't be fun."One pig. // One very happy pig. // This bathtub is perfect for just me and you,' " he says to his rubber duckythen "along comes Pig Number Two." Two might fit in even with the beach ball the second pig is carrying, but surely that's all that can fit. It isn't too long before a third pig jumps in, snorkel, fins and all. A fourth is right behind him. " Arggh,' says Five. And Six gives a toot! / Seven launches his boat with a sailor's salute." Then Eight, Nine and Ten crowd in; the bath is no fun anymore, now that it's so full of piggies. Suddenly, though, one pig spies something frightening. A countdown of moist pigs make a run for itit's a wolf! So now there's one very happy wolf in the tubor is that a zipperand a pig in disguise? Anderson's joyous, porcine counting rhyme is bathtime (and storytime) fun. His bright-eyed, cartoon porkers, rendered in "ink, Photoshop and soap suds," are expressive, goofy and engaging. Toddlers will enjoy this, the cleanest piggy count ever. (Picture book. 2-5) Copyright Kirkus Reviews, used with permission.
