Many parents-to-be want to break out of the traditional mold of blue for boys and pink for girls; McCafferty's lovely book presents 30 ways for the crafters in a baby's life to do just that. Smartly focusing on accessories, stuffed animals, and blankets instead of hard-to-fit clothes, she provides lots of adorable, simple projects so that even a busy crocheter can whip up a cute gift, such as a heart rattle or a teething ring, in very little time. For those with more ambition, there are also more complex projects, such as a stunning striped "Pixie Gnome Hat" or a doily rug that could easily survive the transition from nursery to child's room. McCafferty also provides basic crocheting instructions, which should be good enough to remind readers who've already tried the craft what to do; newbies may want to supplement with a better set of instructions or online videos. Crafting for babies is popular for a number of reasons-babies' things are small and quick to make, they're often cute, and infants look good in pretty much anything. This collection curated by McCafferty (Craft-In) features a fun array of crocheted toys and accessories. All of the standard baby items are here, such as diaper covers and soakers, rattles and toys, hats, shoes, washcloths, and blankets. Standouts include adorable high-top sneakers (complete with laces), rainbow teething keys crocheted from T-shirt yarn, maraca-esque apple tree rattles, and a striped horse lovey. The directions are straightforward, with added orders for any specialty stitches or techniques used. Most of the projects will appeal to beginning-to-intermediate crocheters, and a refresher covering basic stitches and techniques is included in the introduction. VERDICT The combination of cute and clever makes this a winning collection for crocheters interested in making creative items for the babies in their lives. © Copyright 2015.
