Review by Booklist Review

Pippi Longstocking is the strongest girl in the world, and in this volume of vintage Pippi comics, the ebullient redhead uses her muscles to ward off a man trying to buy her house, load the ship that will bring Pippi and her friends Annika and Tommy to Kurrakurradoot Island, save Tommy from a hungry shark, and protect the island children from greedy guys who want to steal their marbles (which are actually pearls). And within that tiny package of brawn, of course, is a generous heart of gold. Little ones will easily identify with Pippi's effervescent energy and her timeless determination to play and play and play all day, for as long as we live. And in the nighttime too. While Pippi is certainly mischievous, her kind heart and good nature always win the day. Vang Nyman's blocky and bright comics are appealingly unembellished, with thick lines filled in with flat primary colors. Though they're now at least 50 years old, Lindgren and Vang Nyman's bold comics are as entertaining as ever.--Hunter, Sarah Copyright 2015 Booklist

Gr 1-4-Lindgren's popular protagonist comes to life once again in this compilation of her comics, published in English for the first time. The book is organized in chapters with titles detailing Pippi's adventures. The spunky heroine continues to have superhuman strength that allows her to lift airborne humans and horses alike. The vignette from which this collection derives its name is the most charming of the 12 strips and highlights the essence of Pippi, a girl who believes in everlasting childhood and play. Young readers will enjoy Vang Nyman's lively illustrations, which depict Pippi's rambunctiousness, loyalty, independence, and spunk. Even her hair that takes on a life of its own. VERDICT A volume that introduces Pippi Longstocking to young readers with the spirit and energy that she merits.-Lisa Gieskes, Richland County Public Library, Columbia, SC (c) Copyright 2015.
