Daniel Herbert, the newly instated Lord Romayne, needs a wife. Someone who can take over managing his estates and running his household, thus leaving Daniel free to continue to do what he loves most in the world: practice medicine. Jessie Kelham, the widow of the late Baron Philip Kelham, needs a husband. After her husband Philip's death, Jessie, initially, had no plans on remarrying, but when she is informed that her young daughter Beth will inherit her father's estate and his title, everything changes. Philip's nephew, Frederick, is outraged that he has been passed over in the will, and he has vowed he will take guardianship of Beth. Neither Daniel nor Jessie is exactly what the other had in mind, but one kiss between them changes everything. In the latest polished addition in her Lost Lords series, RITA Award-winning Putney (Not Quite a Wife, 2014) gifts readers with impeccably crafted Regency romance with a strong sense of time and place as well as a beautifully matched couple they won't soon forget.--Charles, John Copyright 2015 Booklist

Although surprised and dismayed to find his current service-oriented life upended when he suddenly inherits the Romayne barony, dedicated surgeon and vicar Daniel Herbert bravely shoulders his responsibilities and sets off to London in search of a wife. There, he finds himself totally captivated by beautiful Jessie, Lady Kelham, a recent widow in desperate need of a husband-but a woman who seems bent on avoiding him at all costs. And then a threat and a compromising kiss change everything, and Jessie and Daniel are forced to come to terms with their fears and their feelings as they struggle to outwit both expected and unexpected blackguards. VERDICT A caring heroine with a sordid past who doubts her self-worth and a hero plagued by soul-destroying guilt find love and redemption in a captivating romance that is graced with impeccable character development, flawless prose, and several surprising twists.
