Review by Booklist Review

This accessible manual offers more than a dozen age-appropriate sewing craft projects that will appeal to first-timers and seasoned crafters alike. Tasks require just three basic stitches: running, up-and-over, and backstitch. Readers learn how to thread a needle, lay out simple patterns, and recycle readily accessible fabrics (old T-shirts, pillowcases, and towels, for example). Graphics-rich pages offer line drawings, illustrations, full-color photographs, and inset fact boxes. Definitions for technical terms and tips on selecting and managing sewing supplies are also provided. Readers will appreciate the step-by-step directions (and those with a little more experience should be able to complete projects independently). The text suggests possible uses for finished items and encourages users to use their own creativity to experiment and go beyond the provided examples. The oversize picture-book format is similar to Amie Plumley and Andria Lisle's Sewing School (2010). This kid-friendly introduction to sewing should spark interest and motivate aspiring crafters.--McBroom, Kathleen Copyright 2014 Booklist

Gr 4-8-Packed with useful tips and interesting projects, these attractive books introduce readers to new pastimes and take experienced hobbyists to the next level. Activities range from neat tricks to try on a whim, such as sprouting a sweet potato in a glass of water, to more involved projects, like creating a covered bulletin board to display a collection. Project instructions are thoughtfully illustrated using a mix of photos and diagrams. One chart shows crafters exactly how thread goes in and out of fabric in Cool Stuff to Sew, while a photo lets them assess whether their bread dough has been kneaded enough in Cool Stuff to Bake. The large images dominate busy but uncluttered page layouts in vibrant colors. Sidebars offer fun facts about science, art, and even history. Appealing and informative, these books are winners.
