Defined here as a way of altering a surface with stitches, embroidery in all its richness and variety is presented in this alphabetically arranged guide to a wealth of stitches available to the needle crafter. Thread, needles, and fabric are the triumvirate of necessary materials required for all embroidery projects, and an introductory discussion of those factors is joined by commentary on transferring design onto fabric. Once these important preliminary issues are cleared, then the meat of the book is offered: the stitches themselves, from simple to complicated. The thing to realize about this book is that every stitch is afforded clear and detailed textual directions augmented by exquisitely clear photographs. This book of basics is, then, basic to a comprehensive crafts-books collection in the public library.--Hooper, Brad Copyright 2014 Booklist

Search's latest A-Z title, authored by Country Bumpkin, an Australian publishing house, features a variety of embroidery stitches, including basics such as running, satin, and blanket stitches; numerous types of knots; ribbonwork, including ribbon flowers; and specialty stitches. Each stitch is illustrated with step-by-step close-up photographs, many including overlaid call outs that show the needle's path through the fabric. Though the focus is on the stitches, a variety of interesting needlework tips are interspersed throughout the book, and there's a useful guide to needle sizes and types and embroidery transfer methods in the introduction. VERDICT This useful encyclopedia includes the basic stitches that novices need to know to get started with embroidery, as well as specialty ones that will appeal to intermediate and advanced embroiderers who are interested in adding embellishment or flair to their needlework.
