Need fresh inspiration for holiday cookie exchanges? Consider this collection of winning recipes from the Chicago Tribune's holiday cookie contest, in which nearly three decades' worth of cookies are conveniently arranged by type (e.g., simple drop cookies, chocolate delights, sandwich cookies). While these recipes are simpler than those appearing in The Gourmet Cookie Book or Tracey Zabar's One Sweet Cookie, they are just as diverse. Cherry pie almond thumbprints, cinnamon toffee bars, and other recipes produce anywhere from one to ten dozen cookies, and each identifies the year the recipe was submitted to the contest and whether it placed or received an honorable mention. A few recipes, such as springerle and drommer (dreamer) cookies, include hard-to-find ingredients, e.g., baker's ammonia and blanched almond halves, but these are easy to substitute. VERDICT A timely cookie collection that's big on variety and nostalgia. (c) Copyright 2014. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. No redistribution permitted.
