The creative woodturner Inspiring ideas and projects for developing your own woodturning style

Terry Martin, 1947-

Book - 2014

The Creative Woodturner is not your usual "how-to" woodturning book. It won't tell you what a chuck is, how to sharpen a scraper, or how to turn a goblet. Instead, this book is a "how-to" for unlocking curiosity, how to break the rules, and for following one's own artistic path with confidence. Designed to give readers a wide-perspective on creativity, The Creative Woodturner begins first with insightful commentary, quotes, and examples from the woodturning and art community that will both inspire and inform. In addition, the author shares his Idea Tools: questions to ask during the planning and creative process that are as important to the creation of the woodturning project as any equipment in the shop. Final...ly, 16 one-of-a-kind projects--from boxes and vessels to bowls and one-of-a-kind scultpures--are featured that will spark the creative mindset of any woodturner.

Review by Library Journal Review

For those wanting to push the envelope of traditional wood turning, this book might be a guide. Martin has authored two works on wood turning (Wood Dreaming; coauthor, New Masters of Woodturning), emphasizing the art of the craft. He hopes to inspire with this collection and to show that anything is possible. Indeed, the projects detailed in this book have left practicality behind. Besides lathe work, there is a lot of intricate manipulation using carving, small power tools, and wood burning. While each design includes a discourse on the techniques used, this volume is not for beginners, as the plans require advanced skills and an extensive collection of tools. The wood used is primarily from Australia, the author's home. VERDICT For readers looking for pure inspiration and artistic spirit, this book is beautiful-the manipulation of materials, tools, and technique is incredible. Each piece is a labor of love and Martin has great talent. But for the beginner or general wood turner, the projects might be frustrating. Solid foundation books for the craft include Richard Raffan's Taunton's Complete Illustrated Guide to Turning, Fine Woodworking's Turning Techniques & Projects or James Rodger's A Lesson Plan for Woodturning.
