Review by Library Journal Review

With the help of a new collaborator, Koike returns to his superior samurai tale moments after it ended, decades ago. The run of the Japanese original, Lone Wolf and Cub, drawn by Goseki Kojima, concluded in 1976. In this new series, begun in 2004 and published in America here for the first time, Mori faithfully reproduces Kojima's style so that the monochrome artwork is paired perfectly with Koike's story. Ogami Itto, the original Lone Wolf, and his mortal foe Yagyu Retsudo lie dead on the sand. Daigoro, the Cub, stands alone by his father's fallen body as all witnesses to the fatal duel have left the combatants to rot, politics preventing them from burying the bodies. It falls to wandering swordsman Togo Shigekata to care for young Daigoro, but he is about to be embroiled in the plots of others. Verdict The original Lone Wolf and Cub is a classic of the samurai manga genre. Any reader of that series or fan of samurai action in any media will relish this new beginning.-Eric Norton, McMillan Memorial Lib., Wisconsin Rapids (c) Copyright 2014.
