Shaker style remains a popular trend, even after 150 years. Author Huey and the editors of Popular Woodworking, authors in their own right, add to the creative diversity of this mix of furniture projects that range from tables and seating to cabinets, chests, and more. Some of the standouts are the lovely workbench, tailor's cabinet, and coffee table. While there are a few very simple projects, such as shelves, benches, and side tables, most of these are better for the intermediate woodworker. Familiarity with tools and basic construction is understood, and many of the designs are complex. Each plan is well organized, with a cutting and supplies list and detailed measurements in exploded view. Some of the more specialized ventures include technique instruction and tips on material and construction. VERDICT Many Shaker-style furniture project books exist, but this title rises above with very fine designs and excellent instruction. These are beautiful pieces and will be desirable to aspiring woodworkers with some experience under their belt. A solid purchase and a great addition to any furniture building collection.
