Eleven days

Stav Sherez

Book - 2014

Eleven Days follows DI Jack Carrigan and DS Geneva Miller as they investigate a vicious fire that engulfs a quiet convent in West London. There were ten nuns in residence--their bodies discovered behind a locked door--and an eleventh body in the chapel. Who is this stranger, and who would target a group of nuns in a wealthy residential neighborhood? Battling church hierarchy and internal politics, Carrigan and Miller must parse through a vast network that reaches back to the early 1970s South America and the onset of the Liberation Theology movement, proving that these nuns are far more radical than first meets the eye. Meanwhile, a vicious new criminal element--possibly related to the convent fire--makes its presence felt in the streets of... London. Eleven days before Christmas, Carrigan and Miller are in a race against time to solve a case that spans four decades and two continents, while contending with a homegrown threat that leaves the Met gasping for breath.

Review by Publisher's Weekly Review

In Sherez's engrossing sequel to 2013's A Dark Redemption, Det. Insp. Jack Carrigan and Det. Sgt. Geneva Miller investigate the mysterious deaths of 10 nuns in a fire at a convent house in a posh London neighborhood. The nuns appear to have perished sitting at a table, having made no effort to escape the flames. An unidentified 11th victim turns up in a confession booth. Although Assistant Chief Constable Quinn presses for a quick and easy solution, Carrigan and his team soon realize this is a complex case. Most of the nuns served time in Peru, and at least five of them were tortured by a technique known as "tickling the bone," but their wounds are 30 to 40 years old. Father McCarthy, a priest who often visited the convent, is suddenly unavailable for questioning, and Roger Holden, the diocese's spokesman, is less than forthcoming. A surprising plot and well-developed characters led by Carrigan and Miller make for a highly satisfying mystery. Agent: Lesley Thorne, Aitken Alexander Associates (U.K.).
