This moody murder mystery series is set in rural Wales and features location shots of rugged coastlines, wooded hills, and the darkly picturesque town of Aberystwyth. Each show covers an individual case, from the initial grisly discovery through a twisting investigation to a solution that in one case is psychologically jarring. Newly arrived Detective Chief Inspector Tom Mathias (Richard Harrington) is portrayed as an outsider, and his brooding manner as well as subtle clues hint at a troubled past. He is assisted by a team including DI Mared Rhys (Mali Harries), a local woman who helps him to navigate the social complexities of the isolated village. Their boss, Chief Superintendent Bran Prosser (Aneirin Hughes), lurks in the background, with viewers left uncertain as to whether he is a malevolent force or merely a concerned leader. VERDICT Confirmed viewers of British mysteries wanting rather dark fare such as is found in David Tennant's Broadchurch will enthusiastically welcome Hinterland.-Lawrence Maxted, Gannon Univ.
