At times, the rhymes feel overcrowded with words, but there's no missing the steady, comforting message: "I love you more than the animals being born/ In the tall blowing grasses of a warm June morn." Melo's illustrations-acrylic paintings on gessoed paper-have a rich warmth and texture, from the craqueleur of a violet night sky to cozy scenes of around-the-year friendship between a frizzy-haired girl and her fuzzy brown teddy bear.
