Affluent architect Ryota and his wife Midori face a terrible dilemma when they learn that their six-year-old son, Keita, was accidentally switched at birth and is not their biological child. In the wake of this revelation, Ryota's sense of fatherhood is shaken to the core as he witnesses both his wife's enduring devotion to Keita and his own conflicting feelings of nature versus nurture. Now his decision on which boy is truly his son will change the family's lives forever.

Review by Library Journal Review

An appealing Cannes Film Festival Jury Prize winner, Kore-eda Hirokazu's (Still Walking, LJ 5/15/11) earnest domestic drama follows a few months in the entangled lives of two dissimilar married couples whose six-year-old sons were switched at birth. One father is working-class, earthy, and rough around the edges, while the other is upper-middle-class, careerist, and a bit snooty. Both wrenchingly deal in this very relatable film with a no-win situation in deciding whether to swap the sons they've raised in their own way. (c) Copyright 2014.
