Roll, flatten, cut, shape these imaginative clay crafts are simple yet creative. Materials needed include air-drying clay (which may be purchased or made using the vegan clay recipe included in the book), toothpicks, white glue, thin bamboo kebab sticks, a plastic knife, a small clay pot, and a rolling pin. The easy 5-step directions for the 14 crafts are amply illustrated as well as described. Although projects are shown in specific colors, children are not restricted to these colors; neither are they restricted to these projects. These can be jumping-off points for projects of their own. This installment in the Earth-Friendly Crafts in 5 Easy Steps series not only encourages young readers to think freely but also gives parents, teachers, club leaders, and day-care providers ideas for engaging children in hands-on activities. Gr 2-4-Each of these books contains 14 projects, all of which can be made from either common household items or those that are inexpensive and easily obtainable. The crafts are sufficiently varied, so boys and girls should find them appealing. Color photos illustrate the steps. One objection would be that on the spread about making a mandala in Nuts, there is no indication that it has any other significance than just being a design. Papier-Mache, oddly, does not have a recipe for the titular material. There is no explanation of why earth-friendly crafts are important. The simplicity of many of the projects, particularly those in Clay, make them suitable for burgeoning crafters. (c) Copyright 2013. These are simple projects environmentally conscious children will enjoy. Composed of ordinary, recycled/recyclable materials and explained in five easy steps, the resulting items are original toys, gifts, or decorations. Each volume's fourteen projects call for paper, clay, scissors, glue, and other easily accessible crafting components. The rather unattractive books suffer from cheesy design touches.
