Independence day

Ben Coes

Book - 2015

"Dewey Andreas, former Delta and newly recruited intelligence agent, is sidelined after screwing up his last two operations. Still drowning in grief after the tragic murder of his fiance, Dewey has seemingly lost his focus, his edge, and the confidence of his superiors. A high level Russian hacker, known only as Cloud, is believed to be routing large amounts of money to various Al Qaeda terror cells, and the mission is to capture and render harmless Cloud. At the same time, a back-up team ...is sent after the only known associate of Cloud, a ballerina believed to be his girlfriend. Unwilling to sit out the mission as ordered, Dewey defies his superiors, and goes rogue, surreptitiously following and tracking the two teams. What should be a pair of simple snatch and grab operations, goes horribly wrong--both teams are ambushed and wiped out. Only through the unexpected intervention of Dewey does the ballerina survive. On the run, with no back-up, Cloud's girlfriend reveals a shocking secret--a plot so audacious and deadly that their masterminds behind it would risk anything and kill anybody to prevent its exposure. It's a plot that, in less than three days, will completely remake the world's political landscape and put at risk every single person in the Western world. With only three days left, Dewey Andreas must unravel and stop this plot or see everything destroyed. A plot that goes live on July 4th--Independence Day"--

*Starred Review* A Russian hacker, known only as Cloud, watched his family assassinated when he was a young boy, and now he has the capability to bestow justice on his enemies. Meanwhile, Dewey Andreas wants to give up being an American intelligence agent, but he keeps getting dragged back in, even though he's still grieving the death of the love of his life. This time the mission is to capture Cloud, but Andreas quickly goes rogue, tracking Cloud on his own but also shadowing a parallel mission involving Cloud's ballerina girlfriend. Turns out there is a nuclear device set to go off on the Fourth of July, and the rogue Dewey has the best chance of stopping it. Coes is in the same league as Brad Thor and Vince Flynn, and this high-octane race against time will have plot-driven thriller readers unable to turn the pages fast enough. Libraries should grab this one in quantity and make sure Coes' backlist is available as well. Copyright 2014 Booklist Reviews.

A heartrending prolog sets the stage for a 30-year plot to avenge the betrayal and death of the antagonist's parents by an American agent. Cloud, a hit man for the Russian mafia and a brilliant hacker, is focused on taking down the country that promised his father asylum in exchange for a highly advanced weapon and then murdered him. The fifth series entry (after An Eye for an Eye) has Dewey under attack from a political aspirant who is determined to show that NOC (nonofficial covers without diplomatic immunity) agents like Dewey are a national security risk. As our hero fends off his rivals, he is also tasked with locating the nuclear bomb Cloud has stolen. VERDICT The action is nail-bitingly intense as Dewey and his team try to identify the U.S. city scheduled for destruction and stop delivery of the bomb before a national tragedy occurs. With the clock ticking, readers are taken on a suspenseful race to numerous locations and situations. Coes's latest is certain to appeal to his fan base and attract new aficionados. Compelling characters, a wealth of technical detail, and ticking-clock suspense make bestseller Coes's fifth Dewey Andreas novel (after 2013's Eye for an Eye) one of the year's best thrillers. CIA director Hector Calibrisi draws the ex-Delta operative turned CIA agent back into action from Dewey's hometown of Castine, Maine, where he retreated after the death of his fiancée six months earlier. Dewey winds up searching for a genius Russian computer hacker, Pyotr Vargarin (aka Cloud), who's acquired a nuclear weapon and is bent on wreaking revenge for earlier ill treatment at American hands. Cloud has hacked his way into the CIA computer system and is always one step ahead as bodies pile up and Dewey goes off the grid to save the U.S. The attack is scheduled for the Fourth of July, which gives Dewey and his comrades only a few days to stop Cloud. Last-minute twists ratchet up the tension as the book races to the final confrontation. 100,000-copy first printing. Agent: Nicole James, Aaron M. Priest Literary Agency. (May) [Page ]. Review by Publisher Summary 4

Dewey Andreas is back...and the clock is ticking! Cloud, a high-level Russian hacker, perhaps the best in the world, has acquired a nuclear weapon. It's an older bomb from the USSR's Cold War arsenal with the power to devastate a major city. Fueled by a dark and personal vendetta, Cloud has put it onto an anonymous trawler, piloted by jihadists, headed straight to America. Dewey Andreas, former Delta working as an agent for the C.I.A., is still drowning in grief after the tragic murder of his fiancée. Dewey has lost his focus, his edge, and the confidence of his superiors. Learning of the missing loose nuke and picking up chatter about an impending terrorist attack on American shores, the best and most talented C.I.A. agents are now chasing both Cloud and the bomb. Acting on credible intel, two highly trained teams are sent into Russia in a two-pronged mission to grab Cloud. But it's a trap, and now America's last hope of stopping the bomb is an unofficial agent gone rogue-Dewey Andreas. With only three days left, Dewey Andreas must find the elusive Cloud. To do so, Dewey will risk everything to find the most dangerous and skilled enemy he's yet faced. For if he fails, American will suffer its most deadly terrorist attack on the Fourth of July-Independence Day.
