"Self-destructive, pigheaded, and overfond of the bottle, Jack Taylor ... is a forty-something ex-cop trying to earn a living as a private detective in his native Galway. Review by Library Journal Review

Jack Taylor, the title character in this mystery series based on novels by Ken Bruen, is a former Irish police detective ousted because he pursued an influential suspect too far. Played by Iain Glen (Game of Thrones; Downton Abbey), Jack turns to private investigation in the Irish city of Galway, where most of the location footage is shot. In this set, he probes a student drug overdose ruled a suicide, stumbles upon murder among Irish Travelers, and is asked to solve the death of a priest who had once been accused of child molestation. Themes throughout include Jack's troubled relationship with his domineering mother, his confrontational attitude toward the police hierarchy, and the uneasy connection many Irish have with the Catholic Church. Jack's aggressive attitude gets him beaten up from time to time, and he is so personally fraught with demons that he has been known to drink himself into oblivion. VERDICT Viewers looking for an action detective drama set in an Irish locale will find Jack Taylor satisfying.-Lawrence Maxted, Gannon Univ. Lib., Erie, PA (c) Copyright 2014.
