An ideal introduction to the ocean's most social mammals, this incorporates the latest scientific research into engaging text and a kid-friendly layout. There are no less than 42 different types of dolphins, and this book explores why they are classified as mammals and describes their famous behaviors. Other topics included are dolphin locomotion, feeding habits, rearing of young, and several hypotheses about their mysterious language. The book concludes by discussing the human fascination with dolphins throughout history and our impact on dolphins' ecosystems and food supply. Vibrant full-color photographs contextualize scientific concepts, and an easily accessed digital companion book is included via online access code, and details dolphin rescue stories with even more images and multimedia activities. The high-interest topic, attractive design, and up-to-date information make this a strong choice for emergent readers.--Anderson, Erin Copyright 2014 Booklist

Gr 1-4-This title shares the latest information on dolphins for beginning readers. Topics-including anatomy, life cycle, and feeding habits-are offered in a readable format. Dolphins are a perennial favorite among children, and students will be fascinated with the images and content offered here. This slim volume features facts printed in different font sizes and at different reading levels and fun underwater images, all enthusiastically presented ("Dolphins can swim five times faster than the fastest human swimmer can!"). Though the thick, slick pages, similar to a board book, make turning them a bit cumbersome, readers should enjoy this fun, accessible title.-Janene Corbin, Rosebank Elementary School, Nashville, TN (c) Copyright 2014.
