This is an attractive, informative book for mycologists and mushroom enthusiasts. Though it focuses on the Midwest, it will be useful for all geographic areas because many mushroom species are found throughout North America. Kuo and Methven (both, Eastern Illinois Univ.) are well-known mycologists who have previously authored other popular books on mushrooms. This volume treats over 500 species and has extensive keys to all groups and species; each species entry features a thorough description and beautiful photograph, often with a photo inset of microscopic features, so essential for proper identification of many species. Though edibility of wild mushrooms is not emphasized, notes on edibility are often included in the general comments. The arrangement is somewhat unusual for a group of organisms. All species are organized alphabetically by genus/species rather than taxonomically or morphologically, but the arrangement works and may even be easier for some. A final chapter on mushroom evolution and current taxonomy based on cutting-edge DNA evidence is included; authorities are attached to species names, which will be useful for scientific purposes. An extremely thorough "Glossary and Index" section contains both genus and species names and a glossary of mycological terms. Overall, a beautiful presentation of a fascinating group of organisms. --Dana L. Richter, Michigan Technological University
