The Hole Truth! Underground Animal Life series tunnels beneath readers' feet to introduce an array of industrious creatures you might otherwise not be lucky enough to see. Each book takes advantage of a long, horizontal trim, all the better to catch these four-legged animals as they dig, nurse, and explore. The photographs are crisp, the layout is clear, and the many side boxes and captions are helpful and rarely overwhelm. Badger's Burrow follows these chunky animals as they dig hundreds of local burrows, prey upon smaller animals with inferior burrows, and birth one to five kits. The boxed fun facts are strong (A newborn badger weighs about 3 ounces. That's the same as 15 quarters), as are the photo arrays of predators and prey. Each title ends with a Science Lab visual identification challenge, as well as a picture glossary, making this a very reader-friendly, unexpectedly high-interest package.--Kraus, Daniel Copyright 2010 Booklist
