Review by Booklist Review

Fans of Hyman's best-selling The Blood Sugar Solution (2012) will undoubtedly want to read his lose-weight-faster sequel. A medical doctor on the advisory board of The Dr. Oz Show, Hyman sensibly encourages readers to avoid processed foods during a 10-day detox. And he makes a strong case for eliminating sodas from the food stamp program, lobbying Congress to tax soda and sugar-sweetened beverages, and asking local stores to stock healthier items. He also provides many healthy, tasty-sounding, if time-consuming recipes, complete with calorie, fat, fiber, carbohydrate, protein, and cholesterol counts. But Hyman, now chairman of the Institute for Functional Medicine, may lose mainstream Americans with some of his advice. For example, he asks detox followers to give up dairy (which he says causes inflammation, allergies, congestion, postnasal drip, sinus problems, eczema, asthma, acne, and even weight gain by spiking insulin levels ) and to turn to herbal laxatives, supplements such as magnesium citrate, and suppositories or enemas if they need help with easy elimination. Not for skeptics of alternative medicine.--Springen, Karen Copyright 2010 Booklist

Review by Publisher's Weekly Review

Canyon Ranch co-medical director Hyman (The Blood Sugar Solution) returns with a program to eradicate the food addictions he says inevitably lead to major health problems. Hyman offers a clear-cut if restrictive plan that addresses food addiction and how it's been promoted by the food industry, with detailed explanations of what you can and cannot eat, as well as recipes. In addition, the author discusses how to prepare your mind, body, and kitchen to embark on the plan, and ways to transition into a long-term program of wellness. Hyman's condemnation of the food industry may be on target, and his advice backed by research, but the plan's required banishment of so many foodstuffs, such as sugars (natural and artificial), dairy, and all grains (including gluten-free products), may be difficult for many readers to follow. However, the short-term nature of the program and its promise of quickly realized benefits-dramatic weight loss, improved sleep, mood, and energy levels, and the minimization of chronic health problems like diabetes, joint pain, autoimmune diseases, and sinus and allergy issues-mean Hyman won't be short of willing takers.
